16x24 Baseball is a tough sport for me to shoot. There's a lot of down time waiting for the action. And if you don't have your camera ready, focused, and aimed where the ball is going to be, well, chances are you aren't going to capture much excitement. So a lot of my baseball photos tend to be at the plate. Where I know a batter will be swinging. Sometimes I can shoot a whole game and not get one image of the ball connecting with the bat. Ugh! But with all those baseball games, and thousands of images of batters at the plate, it was this image with the setting sun reflecting off the chain link fence that made it stand out. Also, the batter is at the end of his swing still watching the ball, and of course the fact that his name is Casey! This is Casey Sheehan of Redlands, CA, taken July 8, 2016 at Criswell Automotive Field at Kelley Park in Gaithersburg, MD. 16x24 This was a portrait taken to accompany a feature article in the Montgomery Sentinel about the Meyers sisters, Abby, Emily and Olivia and their basketball championship season in 2016 playing for Whitman High School. As a sports photographer I often feel like I know the people that I photograph repeatedly. I followed the Whitman girls basketball team a little bit during the 2016 championship season. As I moved around on courtside taking pictures, I could hear the players comments, see their expressions up close, and see how they interacted with each other. Having the opportunity to meet and take portraits of Abby, Emily and Olivia was an interesting experience that I truly enjoyed. Their personalities in person matched how they played the game. They were serious, yet joked around. They were intense, yet they were able to relax and enjoy the photo shoot. The laughed at and with each other and were teasing and playful in ways that only sisters can be. I've got two sisters myself. It's a wonderful thing. These girls are true student athletes. Each of them excelled in the classroom and played sports in addition basketball. Abby played soccer, Emily & Olivia played tennis. They also enjoyed golf and swimming. Currently Emily is a junior at UC Davis, Olivia a sophomore at Princeton University and Abby is taking a gap year and working in Chicago. Photographer: Jacqui South
16x20 I first saw Miranda Deng play in the 2016 state tournament in Olney. I actually picked the assignment so I could see my sister-in-law, who was at the tournament coaching the team from Dorchester High School. It turned out to be a great choice, because it was amazing to watch Miranda take apart each opponent until she took the title. This photo was taken the following year at Wild Lake Tennis Center in Howard County in the state tournemnet, in which she was the singles runner-up. Miranda is currently attending the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Photographer: Jacqui South
